Application Questions

  1. As you consider the various glimpses of grace in this passage, which one was most meaningful to you? How should that impact your outlook and actions this week?

  2. Read 1 John 1:9-10. What things/people are you most tempted to blame for your sin? Why is blaming others counterproductive in response to sin?

  3. In a sin-cursed world, what might people look to for hope besides Christ? How might you be tempted to put hope in these things, and why is hoping in anything but Christ ultimately futile?

  4. Read Ecclesiastes 5:18-26. While your work and your home will feel the effects of Genesis 3 this week, how should the grace we find in Christ change our perspective from despair to one of joy this week

Women’s Event Tomorrow Morning

Remind the ladies in your Life Groups that our last session of What’s Up With Words is tomorrow morning at The Pursuit. Be sure to join the ladies of Compass for the various breakout sessions and time spent together, and pray that it will yield rich fruit in the lives of the women of Compass!

Updated - Registrations for Men’s Retreat

A Note Regarding High Schoolers Attending Men’s Retreat

For the high schoolers registered for the men’s retreat, we will have them in a separate small group led by Maseo Fiorello, our Grove Intern. We want them to be able to participate in the retreat fully, but we also want to be sure that, in our men’s life group discussions, we can have deeper conversations that may be difficult if high schoolers were present. Please let anyone in your Life Group who has registered sons know that this is how we will handle it.

Application Questions:

The Beginning
The Beginning of Temptation & Sin
Genesis 3:1-7

Application Questions

  1. Read Colossians 2:13-15. While our text in Genesis will certainly help us in our fight against temptation, how does this passage remind us that we are ultimately helpless apart from the work of Christ?

  2. What are some of the temptations you know you are likely to encounter this week? What are some specific Scriptures that will help you think clearly and biblically in the face of those temptations?

  3. Read James 1:16-18. What are some of the “good gifts” you can remind yourself of this week when you are tempted? Even if you are in a trial, how will you remind yourself of God’s constant goodness?

  4. Review the temptations you are likely to face this week. How do each of these temptations undermine the character and goodness of God? How can you directly counter these lies of the enemy?

  5. Read Matthew 7:24-27. Disobedience leads to disaster, but obeying Jesus’ words leads to stability. How have you seen both aspects of this reality prove true in your own life? How does that strengthen your confidence in the truth of God’s Word?

A Good Week to Split Men & Women

If you look below at the Application Questions for this week’s sermon, you will see a few questions that might be best answered in the company of only men or women. In other words, spending time splitting up with the men and women might be wise this week.

The Beginning
The Beginning of Marriage
Genesis 2:18-25

Application Questions

  1. Read Deuteronomy 10:20 & 13:4. The phrase “hold fast” in these verses is the same Hebrew word used in Genesis 2:24. How does seeing this word used of devotion to God influence how you think about devotion to your spouse? How should that practically influence your attitudes/actions toward him/her?

  2. Read Romans 12:2. How might you be tempted to be conformed to worldly ideas about marriage? What Scriptures can renew your mind and bring it back to God’s blueprint for marriage?

  3. Read Genesis 2:18. Wives, as you consider God’s design for you to come alongside and help your husband, in what areas would you like to be more intentional in doing this over the next several weeks?

  4. Read Ephesians 5:28-30. Husbands, what will it practically look like for you to cherish your wife in the coming weeks? How should both your attitudes and actions change in order to see this growth?

  5. Read Proverbs 5:1-6. What are some of the devastating effects that sexual immorality could have on your life and family? Why is God’s design for intimacy the best?

Growing Up In Christ
Ephesians 4:11-16

Application Questions

  1. Read Ephesians 4:11-13. What role do you or should you play in accomplishing the task of “building up” the body of Christ? In other words, how can you contribute to this community in a way that helps others attain “to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ”?

  2. What are some common barriers to growth in a local church context? How can you work through those barriers?

  3. Read Ephesians 4:14. Paul makes it clear that there are spiritual consequences when you choose to skip out on God’s design for the local church. Discuss the consequences Paul lists in verse 14. What consequences have you personally observed when believers neglect to prioritize the body of Christ?

  4. Read Ephesians 4:15-16. Paul lists four key components of a biblical church community: love, submission (to Christ, our head), unity, and proper participation. Of these four qualities, which do you feel Compass Bible Church is strongest in? What are the opportunities for growth at Compass Bible church and how can you work to address them?

  3. In what ways might you be tempted to make work about yourself or go outside of the rules/provision God has given you for your work? What does repentance from these ways of thinking look like?

  4. Read Psalm 127:1-2. What are some of the ungodly thoughts we think that can cause us to neglect proper rest and instead pursue “anxious toil”? What biblical thoughts can replace these unbiblical ones?

Life Group Games Details

Our third annual Life Group Games are coming up, one week from Sunday! Chris and Kelly Hernandez, newborn in-tow, will be leading their group’s defense of their title. The games will begin at 6pm and will only go for an hour - no trying to find fake birds in the dark! - and they have been set up so that ALL ages can compete! Please encourage your Life Group to join us for the fellowship of the picnic (starts at 5pm) and the joyful, friendly competition of the Life Group Games. See you at Kleiner Park, Shelter B-1 (same as last year, across from the Meridian Senior Center) for the Picnic and Life Group Games!

Application Questions:

The Beginning
The Beginning of Man
Genesis 1:26-31

Application Questions

  1.  As we wrap up Genesis 1, we’ve repeatedly seen the emphasis of the text on the fact that we are created beings and the implication that God alone is worthy of our worship, trust, and obedience. What will you take away from this chapter as the most significant way these truths should affect your daily life?

  2. Why is it important for us to connect the dots from a biblical concept like the image of God to cultural issues in our own day? When issues like race or gender come up, how can the image of God navigate these topics in a biblical way in the future?

  3. Read Colossians 3:9-10. How do these verses inspire you to greater holiness and a greater knowledge of God? What steps can you take this week to pursue these things?

  4. Read Psalm 127:3-5. How does the thought of these verses go against the grain of our culture? How might some of those non-biblical, cultural ideas creep into your own thinking?

  5. Read 1 Timothy 6:17-19. As people who live in an affluent society, how can you avoid the errors of trusting in or idolizing material wealth on one hand while not neglecting to enjoy with gratitude God’s creation and material blessings on the other?

Is the “Habits” Class for Someone in Your Group?
It’s Time To Start Pushing the Men’s Retreat

Is the “Habits” Class for Someone in Your Group?

If there are folks in your LG or ministry who have a hard time with personal spiritual disciplines, please recommend the class that starts Sunday: Life-Changing Habits: Developing Godly Habits To Increase Kingdom Productivity.

It’s Time To Start Pushing the Men’s Retreat

We are only seven weeks away from the Men’s Retreat! Please encourage the men in your Life Groups to register and attend this year’s retreat. We also have special add-ons - a windbreaker, a camping mug, and a hoodie - that must be ordered by September 17th, next Sunday. Orders for these limited items will close then, and we will only purchase the items that are ordered, so get registered and get those add-ons ordered before next Sunday! You can register here. As it gets closer to the retreat, we’ll send rosters out so that you can see who has (and has not) registered from your Life Group.

Application Questions:

The Beginning
The Beginning of the World
Genesis 1:2-25

Application Questions

  1.  The fact that God created everything should drive us away from idolatry. What idols will tempt you the most? What will you be tempted to trust or desire more than God?

  2. As you consider what we’ve seen in Genesis 1:1-25, why should the reality of a good and glorious creator make these temptations look foolish? What are some specific things about the creation account that stand out to you as you consider this?

  3. Read John 1:1-13. Consider the significance of light in Genesis and also in this important account in John’s Gospel. How should this imagery of light practically affect your life this week?

  4. Read Psalm 148 and note how the Psalmist connects things in creation with praising the Lord. Be more intentional in observing God’s creation with wonder this week. What do you observe in the world that calls you to praise and worship God?

  5. Read Romans 1:21. Considering the context of this passage, why should we view a lack of thanksgiving as a serious problem? What are some things you experience in God’s creation that you should be more grateful for?

Family Weekend Kids Min Servants Needed
More Adventure Club Servants Needed
Update Pastors With Health Updates

Family Weekend Kids Min Servants Needed

For life groups with members that are not in the “actively raising children” stage, we ask that you help serve with childcare for Friday night and Saturday morning at Heritage Middle School with our Kids Min Team. Please have anyone willing to serve in this capacity fill out this form. We want to ensure that we can provide childcare to everyone who needs it so that everyone who wants to attend Family Weekend can.

I’ve attached the breakdown of the sessions below so that you can avoid serving during the sessions that are pertinent to you and that you want to attend.

More Adventure Club Servants Needed

Adventure Club starts on Tuesday, September 5th, and Thursday, September 7th. As we ramp up towards kick-off, we have some needs for volunteers. For Tuesday night, we have needs in the Infant, Toddler, & 2s rooms as well as small group leaders for K-2nd and 3rd-5th grade. For Thursday night, we need small group leaders for 3s through 2nd grade. Please encourage families in your Life Groups who are blessed by this ministry to consider serving at the Adventure Club on the night your group doesn’t meet. They can sign up to serve through the Serve Form.

Update Pastors With Health Updates

Life Group leaders, if someone in your Life Group has received a diagnosis, is in the hospital, or is sick and needs prayer, please pass that information on to one of the pastors. This allows us to follow up and plan visits and prayers. Thank you!

Application Questions:

The Beginning
The Creator God
Genesis 1:1

Application Questions

  1. Read Romans 1:18-23. Why is it important to acknowledge that denying God’s glory in creation is not only an intellectual problem but also a moral one? How should this impact your evangelism?

  2. Read Isaiah 42:8-9. How might you be tempted to try and take glory that belongs to God and apply it to yourself?

  3. How will your life look differently this week if you think more about the questions “What does God want? What will bring him glory” as opposed to the questions “What do I want? What will bring me satisfaction?”

  4. What are some commands of God’s that you struggle to submit to? How should a right fear of the God who spoke the universe into existence change your perspective on this?

  5. Read Psalm 121:1-2. What are some ways that observing God’s power and wisdom in creation should bring comfort and help to you and lessen fear or anxiety?

Family Weekend Registration Live

Family Weekend Registrations are live! You can register for the Friday night banquet and the Saturday morning breakout sessions here.
The third annual Family Weekend will take place from September 22-24. This weekend exists to help families learn how to live biblically while being encouraged through fellowship and having lots of fun together. Friday night will kick off the weekend with a special banquet and teaching from Pastor Ben about "Heavenly Homes: Ordering our Families in Light of Eternity." On Saturday, we will offer three time slots with two different teachings to choose from. These teachings will touch on topics such as singleness, retirement/grand parenting, parenting teens, etc. The whole church will gather for a picnic filled with food, fellowship, and games on Sunday.
Please register children you will need childcare for, however childcare will be limited, so if you have alternative options, please use those. Thank you!

Application Questions:

An All-Consuming Ambition
2 Corinthians 5:9

Application Questions

1. Take some time to fill out the following blanks. Think about various circumstances in your life that can be difficult and fill them in so that you can commit to pleasing the Lord regardless of the situation you find yourself in.

2. Of the three ways to work hard to understand what pleases God, which ones do you need to work to improve? Make a plan to see that happen!

3. Read Hebrews 4:12. How often do you experience conviction after reading/studying the Bible? What do you do in response to that conviction?

4. Read Psalm 139:23–24 and James 4:17. Is there anything in your life (thoughts or behavior) that your conscience has indicated is a sin and is a barrier to pleasing the Lord? Remember: This could be something you need to start OR stop doing, and it could be something inherently good that is consuming you.

5. Read Proverbs 15:22 and Proverbs 19:20–21. Have you surrounded yourself with wise counsel? Write down the names of those you consider wise counsel and share them with the group. Do you run important decisions by them before you finalize your plans? Explain that process.

They can fill out the application here. Continue to pray for this year to be the most fruitful year of evangelism for our church; that we may see more baptisms as more people are brought from death to life by the power of the Gospel. 4. Write down the name of one person that you can share the gospel with this week. Plan a time to meet with them so you can share how God has changed your life and to explain the good news of salvation in Jesus Christ.

Application Questions:

Summer in the Psalms
Dissonant Despair
Psalm 69

  1. Read Psalm 69:1-3. If you are currently in a season of sorrow/suffering, use this text as a template to honestly put into words what you are experiencing and feeling. Be detailed and specific.

  2. Read Psalm 69:4-12. Identify parallels between David's experience in this present circumstance to Christ's experience(s) during his life and ministry on earth. What does this teach us about how Christ knows, understands, and sympathizes with our suffering?

  3. Read Psalm 69:13-28. What aspects of God's character do you see David targeting in his prayer? How does targeting our prayers toward specific aspects of God's character provide help/comfort in seasons of sorrow? Using your response to question 1, create a prayer list that targets specific aspects of God's character that connect to what you are experiencing and feeling.

  4. Read Psalm 69:29-36. David chooses to praise the Lord in the midst of his present suffering. What can we do today to prepare our hearts to praise the Lord in our suffering tomorrow?

  5. Read Psalm 69:1-3; 34-36. David begins with great sorrow and ends with great hope, even though there is no indication of his painful circumstances subsiding. How does this Psalm help us navigate the dissonance of our despair? What hope does this Psalm provide for those who are "stuck between a painful circumstance and a theological truth?"

Deacons Meeting Video
Biblical Counseling Training Track

Deacon’s Meeting Video

Thank you to everyone who was able to attend last Friday’s Deacon’s Meeting! We hope that it was a great time of encouragement together. For those who were unable to attend the meeting, you can find the video of the meeting below.

Biblical Counseling Training Track

As was mentioned at the Deacons’ Meeting, we are launching our Biblical Counseling Training Track this Fall. The program will be one year, starting in October 2023 and ending in July 2024, with classes meeting at the 11am service each week. Even if you do not desire to be part of our Biblical Counseling ministry, this will be an incredibly beneficial training for discipling others in Life Groups and ministries. You can register for the program here.

Application Questions:

Summer in the Psalms
A Home in a Hopeless World
Psalm 90

  1. Read Matthew 6:12-13. Why might you be tempted to neglect making confession and asking for help against temptation consistent parts of your prayers? Why are these things so important?

  2. Read Psalm 39:4-6. How can considering the brevity of life actually be a healthy and godly thought? What are some earthly things or perspectives that you may actually place too much emphasis on in light of eternity?

  3. Read Psalm 90:14. How can you make the sentiment of this verse a goal in your daily time with the Lord? How can these times be times of satisfaction with God’s steadfast love instead of just going through the motions?

  4. Read Proverbs 3:5-6. These may be familiar verses, but what does it practically look like when you “lean on your own understanding” instead of relying on God? What can you do to "acknowledge him” more this week?

  5. Read Psalm 90:1-2. As you conclude your time with this Psalm, how will you be encouraged knowing that it is possible to have a dwelling place in a God who reigns from everlasting to everlasting?

Men’s Retreat Registration Is Live!

Men’s Retreat Registration Is Live!

Registration for our 2023 Men’s Retreat is Live! You can register here. As a gift to our Deacons, we will be giving you men a free Camping Mug, one of the add-ons that can be purchased - no need to purchase one yourself unless you’d like multiples of it! Please make a point to a) attend yourself and b) encourage the men in your Life Group and ministries to attend.

At this year's retreat, we will open our Bibles to learn more about the "better country." Our time in worship, study, and fellowship will be a needed encouragement as our culture mocks God and persecutes those who worship Him. As the pressures of this world squeeze in on the church, we will find fuel for the race by fixing our eyes on the finish line!

Application Questions:

Summer in the Psalms
The Person Who Gets to be Close to God
Psalm 15

  1. Read Psalm 27:4. What other desires in your own heart might compete with close fellowship with God? Why is God alone ultimately the only one supremely worthy of our affections and attention?

  2. Read Philippians 3:7-16. Consider Paul’s example here. Why should a right understanding of justification (we receive Christ’s righteousness through faith) lead to an aggressive pursuit of sanctification (living out Christ’s righteousness in our lives)?

  3. In what ways in the past have you not “spoken truth in your heart”? In what ways right now may you be tempted to not be honest with yourself? How can you correct these thoughts with biblical truth?

  4. Out of the five aspects of character listed in point 3, which one stood out most to you. How should your life look differently this week as you pursue growth in this area?

  5. Read Matthew 7:24-27. Think through some of the temptations you commonly face. If you listen to Jesus, how will keeping his commands bring safety and stability to your life? If you ignore his words, how will that be destructive?

Spouses Welcome at the Deacons Meeting
John Sanborn Is Heading to Uganda

July Focus of the Month

Reminder: Deacons Meeting Preparation

Please spend some time preparing before our next Deacon meeting. During our meeting we’ll spend some time in a large group discussion. To be fully prepared for that discussion please spend time alone and with your spouse thinking about and writing down some answers to the following questions::

  • What has been encouraging over the last year of ministry? How have you been refreshed by ministry? What reasons do you have to be grateful? How has God answered prayers? How have people gotten saved or grown in Christlikeness? How have YOU grown? What Scriptures did God bring to mind and solidify in your heart through faithful service in this ministry post?

  • What has been discouraging over the last year of ministry? Do you feel worn down and beat up in any way? What trials has your group endured? How have difficult people in your ministry caused pain or problems for you or others? How has the ministry NOT worked out in a way that you desired it would? Have you been mistreated or misrepresented by those you lead? Have those you lead in your life group or ministry not responded with faithfulness?

And remember the details: July 28th, 6pm-8:30pm, Join us for dinner, fellowship, and an encouraging time of devotion. We will be meeting at the Stonehill Church Offices (1608 N Meridian Rd, Meridian, ID 83642) in their chapel space. Please let Cody know (cody@compassbible.tv) if you can’t make it for any reason.

Your spouses - even if they don’t serve as a deacon with you - are more than welcome to attend the Deacon Meeting! We are grateful for both of you and pray that both of you will be encouraged through this time together.

John Sanborn Is Heading to Uganda

John Sanborn is heading to Uganda from September 4th through the 28th to help support Shannon Hurley and Sufficiency of Scripture Ministries, our ministry partner there. Below is a letter detailing what he will be doing while he is there. As the trip gets closer, we will have details for how you and your life group can partner with his trip to Uganda. If you would like to have John come and share more about the work at your Life Group, whether before or after the trip, please feel free to reach out. You can also watch the video John put together below, which shows the work that he does on his previous trips out to SOS Ministries.

Dear Church Family,

I hope all is well with everyone! As most of you already know, Compass Bible Church supports the Hurley family in Uganda. They are our missionary family abroad. Few of us have had the privilege to travel to East Africa to serve alongside them. God has presented me with another amazing opportunity to again go and serve him with the abilities that which he has given me. I am still able and willing to make the trek to East Africa to be in service to our King. The tasks at hand will be grading and excavating areas on campus at SOS Uganda’s development manager has requested the following tasks:

-Finish grading around church building

-Finish grading of family tri-units 1-5 and 6-10 + Courtyards

-Clearing the bush (AKA Jungle) for future FTU building and PTP buildings of double triplex with plumbing

-Filling of the old Barrow Pit for future building site

-Road Maintenance

-and unknown added tasks (last minute)

Please pray about it and consider teaming up with us this trip in prayer and support. The word says in Matthew 6:21 for where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. As Pastor Ben says LET’S GO! In this case I look at it as I get to go and count it an honor to do so in service to the King. Lord willing…Depart September 4th and return on September 28th.

Love you all so much,

John

Psalm 58

  1. Read Matthew 5:4. How much would you say you mourn over your own sin and the sin around you in the world? What keeps you from being truly grieved by sin?.

  3. Read Luke 18:9-14. What is the difference between righteous prayers for God’s justice and self-righteous prayers like the one of the Pharisee in this passage? How can you make sure that your prayers don’t follow his example, but that of David in Psalm 58?

  4. Read Psalm 37:8-9. Are you tempted towards worry or anger because of the wickedness that you see in the world? How can these verses and what we learned in Psalm 58 either redirect or calm your concern?

July Focus of the Month

Deacon Meeting Preparation

Pray For Men’s Event Tomorrow
Family Weekend Dates
Deacon Meeting Details

July Focus of the Month

Pray For the Men’s Event Tomorrow

This message will deal with the fact that a man of God is a worshiper. This is likely the most important of the messages in this series since what and how we worship determines how we lead, stay focused, and devote ourselves to the church. Pray that this will impact the men of our church as they gather together to worship the Lord.

Family Weekend Dates

Family Weekend will be this September 22nd-24th. We will have our Friday evening Banquet, multiple Saturday morning breakout sessions, and church picnic on Sunday afternoon. And the return of the picnic means the return of the Life Group Games, which we will keep to only one hour! This will help make it easier for everyone to participate. We will ensure this is a fun hour of competition for every life group!

Deacon Meeting Details

July 28th, 6pm-8:30pm, will be our next Deacon Meeting. Join us for dinner, fellowship, and an encouraging time of devotion. We will be meeting at the Stonehill Church Offices (1608 N Meridian Rd, Meridian, ID 83642) in their chapel space. Please let Cody know (cody@compassbible.tv) if you can’t make it for any reason.

Application Questions:

  4. Read Psalm 23:4. What are some of the “evils” you personally are most tempted to fear? How do the promised provision and protection of God give you courage in the face of those specific fears?

  5. Read 1 Thessalonians 4:17-18. How should the reality that “we will always be with the Lord” be encouraging to you this week? As you encounter various difficulties this week, be intentional to remind yourself of this truth.

Please Invite Your Men to the Men’s Event

June Focus of the Month

Please Invite Your Men to the Men’s Event

Life Groups leaders, will you please send a specific invite to the men in your group? The next (and last) Instalment of our "What Is a Man?” series will be on July 8th at 8am.

This message will deal with the fact that a man of God is a worshiper. This is likely the most important of the messages in this series since what and how we worship determines how we lead, stay focused, and devote ourselves to the church.

We believe this will be a great time of encouragement and refreshment for the men as we eat, sing praises, fellowship, and learn from God’s word! Register for the event here.

Application Questions:

Pastoral Job Opening

As part of our commitment to always planting churches and our growing ministry here in the Treasure Valley, we are looking to add to our pastoral team here at CBCTV. Please share this opening among your networks as well as with people you may think would be interested (and fit with our commitment to having Authentic and Sacrificial Leaders).

Sunday Night Volunteers Needed

As our high school and middle school ministries grow and more leaders are joining, we are in need of people willing to faithfully serve on Sunday evenings in kids care for our leaders children. This will be at Compass Charter from 5:00-7:30. Please ask members of your life group to prayerfully consider serving in this way. Those that are interested can contact Francesca Ghiorso at francesca@compassbible.tv.

Application Questions:

A Distinct Church
We Will Always Be Working To Plant New Churches

  1. Read Matthew 28:18-20. What are some of the ways churches and people within churches can stray from this biblical mission? How can you help your congregation remain focused on this mission?

  2. As you think about being personally involved in making disciples, where would you most like to see growth in your own life?

  3. Read Philippians 4:14-20. How has your own Christian life been enriched through the generous giving of other Christians through local churches and other ministries? How could God use your sacrificial giving to likewise bless others?

  4. Read Luke 9:57-62. What are some of the ungodly excuses you might be tempted to make to avoid doing “anything, any place, any time” for the Lord? How can you rightly determine between godly vs. selfish motives as you consider ministry decisions in your own life?

  5. As you consider this series on the 8 distinctives of Compass Bible Church, what has been most challenging or encouraging to you personally?

Camp Compass Volunteers Needed
Pray for Land: Offer Sent
Save the Date - Deacon Meeting

June Focus of the Month

We are already halfway through June! As the Summer continues, be sure to implement fellowships as Pastor Josiah encouraged. Use the different pace of summer for Life Groups to build community through fellowships.

Camp Compass Volunteers Needed

Now that Ignite has ended, the biggest week of our Kids Ministry is rapidly approaching - Camp Compass. We still have needs for volunteers, especially for Small Group leaders who will be spending each day with a group of kids as they go throughout all of Camp Compass. We also have a need for assistant leaders to aid Small Group leaders. And finally, for both Sunday afternoon’s setup and Friday afternoon’s teardown, we need volunteers. You can direct anyone who would like to serve to this link. With well over 400 kids signed up already, please encourage those who can serve to do so.

Pray for Land: Offer Sent

Previously we told you that we were in the initial steps of looking at another piece of land. It is on the corner of Joplin Rd. and Star Rd.

We recently put an offer on this property and are now negotiating with the owner. Please pray for the leadership and Building Advisory Team as we seek to finalize the deal points and move into due diligence.

Save the Date - Deacon Meeting

Friday, July 28th, in the evening, we will be having our next Deacon Meeting. Please set aside that evening to join us as we discuss our church’s plans for the Fall and fellowship with one another. More details to come!
