  • Awana Calendar Note - Life Groups that meet on Thursdays, update your group with the current calendar, including NO GROUPS or Awana on 11/11.

  • Men’s Deacon Meeting Reminder - Calling all men deacons! We will be meeting at Pastor Charlie’s house on Saturday 11/6 at 6pm for dinner and a meeting. We will have Bodacious Pig, and we strategically chose Mac N Cheese over salad; you’re welcome.

Application Questions:

It Is Finished
Jesus in the Grave
John 19:31-42

  1. Read 1 Peter 3:15. What are some ways this message/passage will help you be able to give a “reason for the hope that is in you”?

  2. What if a friend or relative told you, “You can’t trust the Gospels as reliable. It’s just a bunch of biased writing and myths.” How would you respond? What are some of the reasons we can trust the written record of Jesus that we have in Scripture?

  3. Read John 19:36-37. The last couple passages in John have brought up many fulfilled prophecies; which fulfilled prophecies have been most interesting or enlightening to you? How does the reality of all of this fulfilled prophecy get you more excited to read and understand the Old Testament?

  4. You will not have the opportunity to give the body of Jesus an honorable burial this week. What are some of the ways you want to bring honor to the Savior this week? Why would some of those possibly be controversial in our culture?

  5. Find a couple passages that remind you of how history is going to end and what the “right side of history” will be. How will these passages encourage you this week?

Helpful CBCTV Statistics

Important Info:

  • Helpful CBCTV Statistics - With our system, we can now know the percentage of adults engaging in the "pillars" at Compass Bible Church Treasure Valley. Here are the current numbers:

    • 85% of the adults are registered for Life Groups

    • 31% of the adults are participating in Partners

    • 49% of the adults are serving somewhere at Compass

  • We would love to see the percentage serving go higher! Life Group Leaders, will you work to get a pulse on who is and isn't serving in your group and encourage those who are not to jump in? As a growing church with many new souls, we will need the percentage to be higher so that the body can function at full health! We always need more people to help with setup/teardown if your group members are looking for a simple place to start and make a high impact.

Application Questions:

It Is Finished
Jesus on the Cross
John 19:16b-30

  1. Read 1 Corinthians 2:2. Why is the cross so important to evangelism? How can you make the cross more central when you share your faith? (Remember: the cross can’t be central to sharing your faith if you aren’t sharing your faith!)

  2. Read John 19:25-26. As you consider this amazing example of tender love from Christ, how do you need to follow this example? Who specifically should you show this kind of love to this week?

  3. Of the five things that were discussed as “finished” in this sermon, which one sticks out to you the most? Pick a verse to memorize this week that will help you meditate on that point.

  4. Read Colossians 2:13-15. What are some ways Christians can wrongly process guilt and shame? How can remembering the reality of what was accomplished on the cross help us process those things rightly?

  5. Read Hebrews 2:14-15. What are some ways you might be tempted to fear death, and how should the death of Christ take away that fear?

Don’t Miss Jesus
John 19:1-16a

A Note for This Week’s Application Questions Discussion

Important Info:

  • A Note for This Week’s Application Questions Discussion - Take a look below at question 3 for this week’s discussion. Pastor Ben has included a note just for you as a Life Group Leader.

Application Questions:

It Is Finished
Failure And Faithfulness
John 18:12-27

  1. Read Psalm 2. How do the realities that God is sovereign over wicked rulers, that he can even turn their wicked schemes for good, and that he will someday judge the world help your perspective this week as you live in a world full of rulers that reject God and his ways?

  2. Read 1 Corinthians 10:12. What are some ways you may tend to overestimate your own spiritual strength? How could your prayer life reflect a greater humble dependence on God?

  3. Read 1 Peter 3:15-17. How prepared do you feel to make a defense for the hope that is in you? This passage also makes it clear that the world should have no just reason to persecute Christians. What are some important ways Christians need to make sure our witness is unstained before the world? (Note for Life Group Leaders: This is not a call to defend every single point of Christian doctrine or master every aspect of apologetics, and make sure your group understands that. But EVERY Christian should be able to defend the gospel and the reason why we hope.)

  4. Read 1 Peter 2:23. What can you learn from the example of Jesus and how he responded even when treated unjustly? Even if you are not experiencing persecution right now, how can you avoid attitudes that might cause you to “revile” others?

  5. Read 2 Corinthians 7:8-11. What are some of the differences between godly grief and worldly grief? How do you see those differences in Peter and Judas? How have you seen them at work in their own life?

Family Weekend Details

Important Info:

  • Leading Your Group Through the Life Group Games - The Life Group Games will consist of 7 simple events that every Life Group will compete in. Pastor Ben and Pastor Charlie will be emceeing the games, doing their best to clearly communicate the details before each game. The games will start at 6pm on Sunday. We can’t wait to see who takes the cup! May the odds be ever in your favoooooooooooor!

  • Family Weekend Details - We have put the schedule and details here https://www.compassbible.tv/family-weekend to make it as easy as possible for everyone to reference. Introducing the Life Group Games

Childcare for Family Weekend’s Friday Banquet

VIDEO - Multiplication - Building Up New Leaders

Important Info:

  • Introducing the Life Group Games - Life Group leaders, this is your chance to prove that you have the most incredible group once and for all. At this year’s first annual Family Weekend, we will be hosting the first annual Life Group Games! Each Life Group will compete over seven events throughout the picnic that will be scored. At the end of the event, we will crown one champion! A trophy will get engraved with your team’s name on it if you are the champion Life Group of the year. Battle for premier bragging rights that will last a whole year. The games have been designed for all age groups to give everyone a fair shot at the cup. Let’s GO!

  • Childcare for Family Weekend’s Friday Banquet - Childcare is full for Friday night. Here’s an idea on how to work with your group: Ask if anyone needs childcare and can’t go unless they get it. Then talk to your group to see if anyone has any babysitters available. If they do, perhaps you can coordinate a few babysitters to watch multiple family’s children simultaneously on Friday night.

  • Watch the Video on Multiplication - Two weeks ago we uploaded a video that elaborates a bit on what the process of raising up new leaders and multiplying life groups should look like. Your group may be going through this process sooner than you think, so make sure you are informed video link (and below).

APPLICATION QUESTIONS

Biblical Behavior - Planning God’s Way
James 4:13-17

  1. Out of the five ways to submit your plans to God from point 1, which one do you need to work on the most? How will you start that process?

  2. Read Romans 12:2. In what ways do you need to "renew your mind" and not be "conformed to this world" so that you can better discern God's will? What's one Bible verse that you could memorize to help this process?

  3. Read Proverbs 12:15 and Proverbs 15:22. Do you discuss important life plans with other Christians before making big decisions? If not, why not? How can you start?

  4. Do you need to repent from any sins of omission? If so, describe the problem. How will you start doing what you've been neglecting?

  5. Read Proverbs 6:6-11. Wise planning is a good thing, and God applauds it. How can you plan wisely while avoiding the temptation to make those plans non-negotiable?

VIDEO - Multiplication - Building Up New Leaders

Childcare for Family Weekend

Servants for Tuesday and Thursday Nights

Important Info:

  • Watch the Video on Multiplication - Last week we uploaded a video that elaborates a bit on what the process of raising up new leaders and multiplying life groups should look like. Your group may be going through this process sooner than you think, so make sure you are informed. Video link

  • Childcare for Family Weekend - As predicted, the spots went fast! We are encouraging people to join a waitlist as we expect that we will be able to open up some more spots. However, we would still encourage you develop creative solutions with your group!

  • Servants for Tuesday and Thursday Nights - New people are continuing to join our church, and they have a LOT of kids. Plants & Pillars on Tuesdays and AWANA on Thursdays are continuing to grow, and it is so exciting to serve these families and teach the word to these children! However, the growing numbers require growing teams of servants! For Thursdays, we are looking for more people to serve in AWANA. For Tuesdays, we could use some people who could serve (even on a rotating basis) in childcare for the life groups that meet at the same school as Plants & Pillars and for some of the leaders in that ministry. Please highlight these opportunities for your groups! For AWANA, you can sign-up online (https://compassbibletv.churchcenter.com/people/forms/216719). For Tuesday nights, contact keegan@compassbible.tv

APPLICATION QUESTIONS

Behind the Scenes - Jesus’ Desire for the Church
John 17:20-26

1. Read Ephesians 4:1-3. After three chapters full of rich theology, what does the fact that Paul begins the applicational section of this letter focused on unity tell us about the importance of unity? What are some ways we might be tempted to underemphasize something that is clearly so important to God?

2. In what ways do you need to guard yourself from being a source of disunity in the church? Look specifically at the six things mentioned in the sermon. Which two would you like to focus on the most in your own life so that you can be a person who is pushing the church toward greater unity?

3. Read John 17:20-21. In what ways can strong unity among believers help our witness to a lost world? In what ways can disunity among believers hurt our witness? How will these realities encourage you to pursue unity with other believers?

4. Read Philippians 3:20-21. How will the reality of heaven help your perspective when it comes to pursuing unity this week?

5. Read John 13:34-35. If the bar is to love others like Jesus loved us, we all have room for improvement. What are some specific ways your love could look more like Christ’s this week?

John 17:6-19

1. Read Revelation 5:9-12. How does this heavenly picture, that exalts Jesus for what he has accomplished in salvation, inspire you to worship him now? What from the sermon this weekend helped you grow in your appreciation for your salvation?

2. As we navigate the deep truths of God’s sovereignty and human responsibility, why do you suppose that some might use God’s sovereignty as an excuse for not embracing Christ in faith or as an excuse for not sharing their faith? Have you ever done that?

3. Read Philippians 1:6. How do verses like this bring a real comfort and joy to your Christian life? Why should verses like this not make us lazy in our Christian life but actually inspire perseverance and growth?

4. Read 1 John 2:15-17 & Romans 12:2. What are some ways the world will tempt you to follow its pattern this week? How will you renew your mind in God’s truth? (Try to be specific here by applying specific truths to the specific temptations you will feel this week.)

5. Read 1 Peter 2:11-12. How have you seen sin amongst people claiming to be Christians damage efforts to share the gospel? In what ways can you seek to “keep your conduct honorable” so that you may faithfully shine the light of the gospel?

For all of you non-Thursday night Life Groups, will you personally ask your group if anyone can serve in this capacity? If they can, please direct them to Morgan Lee morgan@compassbible.tv.

Application Questions

Behind the Scenes - Jesus’ Desire For Himself
John 17:1-5

1. Reread John 17:1. When you encounter suffering, what are some of the things that keep you from prayer, and what are the reasons that some of our prayers are not focused on God’s glory? How can looking at Jesus’ prayer here help you as you pray in the face of difficult times?

2. Read Isaiah 26:8. What are some of the desires of your soul that might compete with God’s name, remembrance, and honor? What will it look like for your life to be consumed in greater measure by God’s honor?

3. Reread John 17:3. What are some of the benefits of this eternal life here and now? How does that motivate you to tell others about this life?

4. Read Colossians 1:24. If you are faithful to serve God’s mission here on earth, what are some of the ways that might look like “filling up what is lacking in Chris’s afflictions”? Why will suffering for the sake of the gospel ultimately be worth it?

5. Read Romans 8:34. Wow! The risen, exalted Son of God is at the right hand of the Father interceding for believers! What encouragement does that bring to you this week?

  2. Read Matthew 4:7-11. It’s clear that God has given us the Bible to fight off temptation. Why is it so hard sometimes for us to rely on the power of the Word more than human wisdom and solutions? Where have you seen this struggle in your own life?

In this role, you will bring a group of kids to each station throughout Camp. Click here to fill out the form to serve and Morgan Lee will be in touch!

Can You Ask for Exploring Compass Host Homes?

We Could Still Use Some Camp Compass Volunteers

Important Info:

  • Can You Ask for Exploring Compass Host Homes? - Exploring Compass seems to be getting more popular and the registrations are filling up each time! Which is great, but we could use a few more host homes. What’s the commitment? The host needs to be available for two Sundays in a row from 4:30-7:30 pm to host dinner and a discussion for 25 adults (and 15 children that will be watched by volunteers in another room or outside). If we get enough host homes, we might only need one family to do this once a year. If anyone in your Life Group is available or wants more information, please have them contact Craig Lee, who is running the Connect Team, at craiglee23@outlook.com.

  • We Could Still Use Some Camp Compass Volunteers - If anyone in your Life Group has the ability to serve at Camp Compass, will you get them connected to Morgan? On Thursday, July 8th, from 6:30-8 pm at Legacy Life church, there will be a walkthrough for all Camp Compass volunteers. And if someone is considering serving at Camp Compass they should come! Please have them email morgan@compassbible.tv if they have any questions.

JOHN 15:26-27; 16:4B-15

July 4, 2021

  1. Read Isaiah 43:10-12. What are some things about God (and from a New Testament perspective about Jesus Christ and the gospel) that should get us excited about being his witnesses? 2. Read John 16:8-11. Looking back at your own story of salvation, how can you see the Spirit working to convict you? (Remember, this may look different for different people). How does the Spirit’s role here encourage you in your own evangelistic efforts?

  3. Read Acts 24:24-25. Are the subjects of righteousness and self-control and judgement all a part of your evangelism? How can you be sure to graciously include these elements are you share the gospel with others?

  4. Read 2 Peter 1:19-21. Imagine for a moment what life would be like if we did not have the New Testament. What are some reasons we should be thankful for the completed revelation of Scripture?

  5. Read Colossians 3:16. How can you lean on the Spirit by letting the word of Christ dwell in you richly this week? Remember, this will include not only reading Scripture but also seeking God’s help in applying it and living it out!

Introduce New People to Taking Ground

Let Your Group Know About Ignite Needs

Getting Partners Graduates Registered

Important Info:

  • Introduce New People to Taking Ground - This Sunday, Pastor Ben will give a brief update on project Taking Ground. Please be sure to listen and relay any critical information to those interested in your Life Group, especially newer folks who weren't here when we launched the project. It might be good to talk about Taking Ground with new people to the church who join your Life Group as a good practice. Send them to the site and walk through any questions they might have, focusing on the three words: invest, work, and pray. This weekend we will continue to emphasize the imperatives of invest, pray, and work and give information that will hopefully motivate the congregation to do so. If there is information you think would help encourage the church that does get mentioned this weekend, let me know so we can include it in future announcements.

  • Let Your Group Know About Ignite Needs - Will you share with your group that Plants & Pillars still needs volunteers for Ignite? They are looking for people to serve in the kitchen, child care, and the games crew. If they are interested, please have them email Keegan McQuate at keegan@compassbible.tv.

  • Getting Partners Graduates Registered - Will you share this form with everyone in your Life Group? We want to know everyone who has graduated Partners in the church (including those who went through Partners before this church launched). Our goal is to get an accurate picture of who's been through this program to better disseminate information, training, and events to graduates.

Application Questions

From John 15:12-17

  1. Read 1 Thessalonians 4:9-12. No living Christian has yet to achieve the perfect standard of loving others as Christ has loved us. How can you grow in your love “more and more” for other Christians?

  2. List some historical examples from the Bible of true selfless love that were clearly not motivated by a desire to “feel good”. Start with Romans 5:6-8, and consider how these examples should change the way you think about love.

  3. Read Colossians 3:12-14. The terms listed in this passage all sound very nice, but how will actually living them out require you to lay down your life?

  4. Read John 15:16. How do you think a lack of love will keep you from the life Jesus describes in this passage? How does that motivate you to obey Jesus’ command to love in our passage?

  5. Read Colossians 1:9-12. Commit to praying regularly for others in your life group and other Christians you are close with. How does this passage help you to know the kinds of things you should pray for these people?
