• New Hire - Business Administrator - Please welcome Chris Hernandez to the CBCTV team! Starting in January, Chris will be leading the Accounting, HR, and Facilities for CBCTV full-time. 2. Read 1 Corinthians 10:12. What are some ways you may tend to overestimate your own spiritual strength? How could your prayer life reflect a greater humble dependence on God?

3. Read 1 Peter 3:15-17. How prepared do you feel to make a defense for the hope that is in you? This passage also makes it clear that the world should have no just reason to persecute Christians. • Introducing the Life Group Games - Life Group leaders, this is your chance to prove that you have the most incredible group once and for all. At this year’s first annual Family Weekend, we will be hosting the first annual Life Group Games! Each Life Group will compete over seven events throughout the picnic that will be scored. At the end of the event, we will crown one champion! A trophy will get engraved with your team’s name on it if you are the champion Life Group of the year. Battle for premier bragging rights that will last a whole year. The games have been designed for all age groups to give everyone a fair shot at the cup. Let’s GO!

• Childcare for Family Weekend’s Friday Banquet - Childcare is full for Friday night. Here’s an idea on how to work with your group: Ask if anyone needs childcare and can’t go unless they get it. Then talk to your group to see if anyone has any babysitters available. If they do, perhaps you can coordinate a few babysitters to watch multiple family’s children simultaneously on Friday night.

Behind the Scenes - Jesus’ Desire For Himself
John 17:1-5

1. Reread John 17:1. When you encounter suffering, what are some of the things that keep you from prayer, and what are the reasons that some of our prayers are not focused on God’s glory? How can looking at Jesus’ prayer here help you as you pray in the face of difficult times?

2. Read Isaiah 26:8. What are some of the desires of your soul that might compete with God’s name, remembrance, and honor? What will it look like for your life to be consumed in greater measure by God’s honor?

3. Reread John 17:3. What are some of the benefits of this eternal life here and now? How does that motivate you to tell others about this life?

4. Read Colossians 1:24. If you are faithful to serve God’s mission here on earth, what are some of the ways that might look like “filling up what is lacking in Chris’s afflictions”? Why will suffering for the sake of the gospel ultimately be worth it?

5. Read Romans 8:34. Wow! The risen, exalted Son of God is at the right hand of the Father interceding for believers! What encouragement does that bring to you this week?

• Pathways Back in Session - This coming week, Pathways Middle School is back in session, so let’s be sure to be mindful of cleanliness this Sunday. Please encourage others to do so as well, as you see fit. They are an excellent landlord, and we want to treat this school as if it was our building. Biblical Behavior - Growing in Humility
James 4:7-12

1. Our working definition for humility is, “A correct view of your own importance.” Which of the ten descriptions of humility do you need to grow in the most? How will you pursue that growth? 

2. Read Matthew 4:7-11. It’s clear that God has given us the Bible to fight off temptation. Why is it so hard sometimes for us to rely on the power of the Word more than human wisdom and solutions? Where have you seen this struggle in your own life? 

3. Why is humility an essential attribute of the Christian life? How can you grow in humility towards others in the church? 

4. Read Mark 14:72. Why is it so important to have a biblical view of and response to sin? How regularly do you confess your sin to God or fellow believers? Why or why not? 

5. Read Luke 6:25. Are there any areas of life where you are seeking temporal comforts or pleasures too much? How can you grow in delayed gratification, seeking the pleasures of the next life more than this one? Why does focusing too much on this life show a lack of humility?

Important Info: 

• What is Family Weekend? - Keep September 24-26 open on your calendar for the 1st Annual Family Weekend. We’re still working out the finer details, but here is the gist: On Friday, couples will come to dinner and hear a message from Pastor Ben about marriage. Limited childcare will be provided (more to come). On Saturday, the men will hear a message on marriage in the early morning and the women in the late morning. Then on Sunday, we will have a church-wide picnic where families can eat, play games, and fellowship with the church. Save the date! This is going to be a really fun and encouraging weekend.

• Guest Preacher This Sunday! - Pastor Kent Dresdow is coming to town. He is the Senior Pastor of NorthCreek Church in Walnut Creek California. Please be praying for Pastor Kent as he travels here to bless us with a teaching from the Word of God! See his application questions below.

• Put the Men’s Event on the Radar - The final session of our Be Prepared series is coming up in a few weeks. It would be great to get huge participation from the men for this final Saturday of the Summer. The message is about being prepared for the return of Christ and I think it will create some great group discussions.

    • Men, the next Be Prepared Men’s Event is coming up on August 28th. This is the last of the series and it’s all about being prepared for Christ’s return. 1. What do you think are some of the biggest misunderstandings about faith in our culture? How do some of these misconceptions make their way into Christianity? How can you avoid them?

2. Read Galatians 6:10-14. What are some ways people in our culture might be tempted to “rely on the works of the law”? How did God open your eyes to see that salvation is only possible through faith in Jesus Christ?

3. Read Hebrews 11:17-19, 24-26. As you consider the temptations you will face this week, how can you focus more on the promises of God than on the fleeting pleasures of sin?

4. Read Joshua 1:6-9. What are some of the ways you may be tempted to be afraid as you serve the Lord? What promises of God will you look to in order to give you courage and strength to overcome these fears?

5. Read Hebrews 11:13-16. What are some of the ways you may be tempted to get too “at home” in this world? What difference will a greater focus on heaven have in your life?
