Getting the Most Out of the Mist
Is Life Really Meaningless?
Ecclesiastes 1:1–11

2021 Reimbursements
Plants & Pillars Parent's Nights

Important Info:

  • 2021 Reimbursements - For those of you who have purchased items for ministry supplies and need to get reimbursed, please make sure those receipts are in by 1/15/22 for anything purchased in 2021. We close our books after January, and you may not be able to receive a reimbursement after this date.

  • Plants & Pillars Parent's Nights - During the typical Plants & Pillars time (6:30-8:30pm), while the students meet at Doral Academy, Pastor Charlie will talk to the dads on 1/8 and the moms on 1/15. That means that any dads or moms that attend Tuesday night Life Groups will have to miss that week. Feel free to change groups that week to split up men and women if that makes the most sense. It's up to you, Life Group leaders! But please encourage the parents in your group to attend these parent's nights.

Application Questions:

Biblical Behavior
Promising God’s Way
James 5:12

  1. Read James 5:12 and Matthew 5:34–37. Based on your sermon notes, why do you think Jesus and James were so concerned with their audience taking oaths? What might the equivalent of those concerns look like in our modern-day?

  2. After studying James 5:12, will the commitments and promises you make carry more weight? How will this change how you make commitments to your spouse, children, coworkers, and fellow believers in the church?

  3. Read Romans 1:9. When you make promises to men, are you conscious that you’re simultaneously making that commitment to God? How can you grow to be more aware that your word is ultimately linked to God’s name when you carry the title of Christian?

  4. As a Christian, you should have the type of reputation that others see a contract with you as a formality because your word is valuable. Do you have that reputation? How can you grow to have a better reputation for integrity among fellow believers and the world?

  5. Spend some time with a spouse or another believer who is a close friend. Ask each other this: “Is my word valuable? When I say I’ll do something, do I follow through? How do you think I can grow in this area?” Spend some time discussing both of your answers, and then pray for God to grow you to be more like Christ continually in the area of integrity.

Getting the Most Out of Expository Preaching

  2. Read Ephesians 3:20-21. Why is it so easy to get to a place where you are expecting “just another Sunday” at church? How should the truths of this passage affect your expectations and how will that affect your preparation for next weekend at church?

  3. What are the biggest distractions you face on a weekly basis during the preaching of God’s Word? What can you do to minimize those?

  4. How could you be more of an “active” listener during preaching?

Helpful CBCTV Statistics

Important Info:

  • Helpful CBCTV Statistics - With our system, we can now know the percentage of adults engaging in the "pillars" at Compass Bible Church Treasure Valley. Here are the current numbers:

    • 85% of the adults are registered for Life Groups

    • 31% of the adults are participating in Partners

    • 49% of the adults are serving somewhere at Compass

  • We would love to see the percentage serving go higher! Life Group Leaders, will you work to get a pulse on who is and isn't serving in your group and encourage those who are not to jump in? As a growing church with many new souls, we will need the percentage to be higher so that the body can function at full health! We always need more people to help with setup/teardown if your group members are looking for a simple place to start and make a high impact.

  1. Read 1 Timothy 1:8-11. What are some of the ways people in our culture do not use the law “lawfully” but instead turn it into some kind of system of self-righteousness? Have you ever done this?

  2. Read Romans 3:27-28. As a Christian, what are some of the ways you might be tempted to forget that you were NOT saved because you were better than anyone else? How can you fight against this pride?

  3. Read Matthew 10:26-33. What are some of the ways you might feel tempted to fear man or how others might pressure you to deny Christ or back down from the truth of Scripture? How does this passage encourage us to not give into those fears?

  4. Read Galatians 1:10. What are some of the smaller ways you may be tempted to please people over pleasing God? How can you fight against those temptations this week?

A Note for This Week’s Application Questions Discussion

Important Info:

  • A Note for This Week’s Application Questions Discussion - Take a look below at question 3 for this week’s discussion. Pastor Ben has included a note just for you as a Life Group Leader.

Application Questions:

It Is Finished
Failure And Faithfulness
John 18:12-27

  1. Read Psalm 2. How do the realities that God is sovereign over wicked rulers, that he can even turn their wicked schemes for good, and that he will someday judge the world help your perspective this week as you live in a world full of rulers that reject God and his ways?

  2. Read 1 Corinthians 10:12. What are some ways you may tend to overestimate your own spiritual strength? How could your prayer life reflect a greater humble dependence on God?

  3. Read 1 Peter 3:15-17. How prepared do you feel to make a defense for the hope that is in you? This passage also makes it clear that the world should have no just reason to persecute Christians. What are some important ways Christians need to make sure our witness is unstained before the world? (Note for Life Group Leaders: This is not a call to defend every single point of Christian doctrine or master every aspect of apologetics, and make sure your group understands that. But EVERY Christian should be able to defend the gospel and the reason why we hope.)

  4. Read 1 Peter 2:23. What can you learn from the example of Jesus and how he responded even when treated unjustly? Even if you are not experiencing persecution right now, how can you avoid attitudes that might cause you to “revile” others?

  5. Read 2 Corinthians 7:8-11. What are some of the differences between godly grief and worldly grief? How do you see those differences in Peter and Judas? How have you seen them at work in their own life?

At the end of the event, we will crown one champion! A trophy will get engraved with your team’s name on it if you are the champion Life Group of the year. Battle for premier bragging rights that will last a whole year. The games have been designed for all age groups to give everyone a fair shot at the cup. Let’s GO!

  • Childcare for Family Weekend’s Friday Banquet - Childcare is full for Friday night. Here’s an idea on how to work with your group: Ask if anyone needs childcare and can’t go unless they get it. Then talk to your group to see if anyone has any babysitters available. If they do, perhaps you can coordinate a few babysitters to watch multiple family’s children simultaneously on Friday night.

  • Watch the Video on Multiplication - Two weeks ago we uploaded a video that elaborates a bit on what the process of raising up new leaders and multiplying life groups should look like. Your group may be going through this process sooner than you think, so make sure you are informed video link (and below).
