Baptisms on Anniversary Sunday

In just one month, on January 14th, 2024, we will be celebrating our five-year anniversary as a church! As part of that exciting Sunday, we will be having baptisms. If you know of anyone in your Life Groups who is considering baptism, would you encourage them to take that important step of obedience? They can sign up for our next Baptism service at compassbible.tv/baptism. And be praying that God would continue to use the public testimony of His work in the lives of believers to call sinners to repentance and to encourage believers to faithfully share the Gospel.

1. Read Colossians 2:13-15. Consider afresh the wonder of what God did to save you. God saved Noah from the flood by the ark. From what did God save you and how did he do it? How should that lead to a lifestyle of sacrifice in response?

2. Read Romans 12:1. In what ways would you like to see your life exemplify this idea of a living sacrifice to a greater extent?

3. Read Genesis 1:28, 9:1, 7. No matter what life stage you are in, how should your life, actions, and attitudes be shaped by this repeated instruction from God?

4. How is the story of Noah and the flood going to grow your faith? Why should you trust God more because of what we have seen in Genesis 6-9?

5. What are some specific promises of God that you want to celebrate this week? Why is it important for us to have a clear sense of what God has promised us through his word?

November Focus of the Month

Compass Charter Door Locking

We will be adjusting the time where the entry doors at Compass Charter lock on Tuesday nights for Adventure Club & Life Groups, so they will now stay unlocked until 7pm. However, from 7pm onwards, if any family arrives late, they will need to be let in by you or someone in your Life Group. Currently, they are locking at 6:30pm and we have volunteers from Adventure Club that monitor for late arrivals presently that will be freed up to serve in Adventure Club in other areas. Please communicate this change to your Life Group members, encouraging them to be there on time, and if they do arrive at 7pm or later, please have them call you to be let in. Remember the virgins of Matthew 25:10-13, who were unwise and therefore absent when the door to the wedding feast was closed and locked, and warn them to not be found locked outside. But also remember Matthew 7:7-8, that everyone who knocks, the door will be opened to them, and show grace for those who arrive late, seeking to enter.

1. Read Ephesians 2:8-10 & James 2:18-26. Why is it important for us to be precise in our thinking and our teaching in explaining that our works do not earn our salvation but are a necessary evidence of it? What problems will arise if we are unclear here one way or another?

2. As you consider Noah’s example of obedient faith, are there any steps of obedience that you are convicted that you need to take? If so, what?

3. Read Hebrews 6:11-12. Would you say you have “full assurance of hope” with regard to your salvation? Biblically, how is it possible to have confidence that you are truly saved and to have no fear of condemnation?

4. Read 2 Peter 3:11-13. How does the coming judgment make you rethink your priorities? How should your life look differently because of these realities?

5. Read Genesis 8:1. How does it encourage you in your current circumstances to know that God remembers his people? How can that motivate your patience, and what does that patience need to look like for you right now?

Fostering Hope

There is a serious need in the Treasure Valley to help out children in hard situations who are coming into foster care. This means that there is an opportunity for us to support local foster children in our community by providing for their practical needs! When kids come into foster care a lot of the time they don’t have essential items needed and we would love to bless these children by providing it for them.

If you or your Lifegroup feel led to donate or have any questions please contact Emely Campbell at emelycampbell92@gmail.com for an updated list of needs. Donations can be dropped off on Sundays to the Fostering Hope Box by the Compass Kids check-in area. Our collection of donations will be combined with Bibles and the 3 Most Important Words for Kids packet.

The deadline for these donations is December 10th! Let’s make an impact on these foster kids and their foster families this Christmas season by showing them Christ’s love through meeting these immediate practical needs.

3. Read Isaiah 66:2. In what ways do you think you most struggle to humble yourself before God? (If you’re brave enough, ask a close friend or your spouse how they would answer this question for you!) How can the promise of grace toward the humble encourage you in these areas?

1. Read Colossians 2:13-15. While our text in Genesis will certainly help us in our fight against temptation, how does this passage remind us that we are ultimately helpless apart from the work of Christ?

2. What are some of the temptations you know you are likely to encounter this week? What are some specific Scriptures that will help you think clearly and biblically in the face of those temptations?

3. Read James 1:16-18. What are some of the “good gifts” you can remind yourself of this week when you are tempted? Even if you are in a trial, how will you remind yourself of God’s constant goodness?

4. Review the temptations you are likely to face this week. How do each of these temptations undermine the character and goodness of God? How can you directly counter these lies of the enemy?

2023/2024 Adventure Club Schedules

Life Group Games Details

Our third annual Life Group Games are coming up, one week from Sunday! Chris and Kelly Hernandez, newborn in-tow, will be leading their group’s defense of their title. The games will begin at 6pm and will only go for an hour - no trying to find fake birds in the dark! - and they have been set up so that ALL ages can compete! Please encourage your Life Group to join us for the fellowship of the picnic (starts at 5pm) and the joyful, friendly competition of the Life Group Games. See you at Kleiner Park, Shelter B-1 (same as last year, across from the Meridian Senior Center) for the Picnic and Life Group Games!

1.  As we wrap up Genesis 1, we’ve repeatedly seen the emphasis of the text on the fact that we are created beings and the implication that God alone is worthy of our worship, trust, and obedience. What will you take away from this chapter as the most significant way these truths should affect your daily life?

2. Why is it important for us to connect the dots from a biblical concept like the image of God to cultural issues in our own day? When issues like race or gender come up, how can the image of God navigate these topics in a biblical way in the future?

It’s Time To Start Pushing the Men’s Retreat

We are only seven weeks away from the Men’s Retreat! Please encourage the men in your Life Groups to register and attend this year’s retreat. We also have special add-ons - a windbreaker, a camping mug, and a hoodie - that must be ordered by September 17th, next Sunday. Orders for these limited items will close then, and we will only purchase the items that are ordered, so get registered and get those add-ons ordered before next Sunday! You can register here. 1.  The fact that God created everything should drive us away from idolatry. What idols will tempt you the most? What will you be tempted to trust or desire more than God?

2. As you consider what we’ve seen in Genesis 1:1-25, why should the reality of a good and glorious creator make these temptations look foolish? What are some specific things about the creation account that stand out to you as you consider this?

3. Read John 1:1-13. Consider the significance of light in Genesis and also in this important account in John’s Gospel. How should this imagery of light practically affect your life this week?

4. Read Psalm 148 and note how the Psalmist connects things in creation with praising the Lord. Be more intentional in observing God’s creation with wonder this week. What do you observe in the world that calls you to praise and worship God?

Family Weekend Kids Min Servants Needed

For life groups with members that are not in the “actively raising children” stage, we ask that you help serve with childcare for Friday night and Saturday morning at Heritage Middle School with our Kids Min Team. Please have anyone willing to serve in this capacity fill out this form. We want to ensure that we can provide childcare to everyone who needs it so that everyone who wants to attend Family Weekend can.

I’ve attached the breakdown of the sessions below so that you can avoid serving during the sessions that are pertinent to you and that you want to attend.

More Adventure Club Servants Needed

Adventure Club starts on Tuesday, September 5th, and Thursday, September 7th. As we ramp up towards kick-off, we have some needs for volunteers. 1. Read Romans 1:18-23. Why is it important to acknowledge that denying God’s glory in creation is not only an intellectual problem but also a moral one? How should this impact your evangelism?

Adventure Club starts up Tuesday, September 5th and Thursday, September 7th. As we ramp up towards kick-off, we have some needs for volunteers. For Tuesday night, we have needs in the Infant, Toddler, & 2s rooms as well as small group leaders for K-2nd and 3rd-5th grade. For Thursday night, we need small group leaders for 3s through 2nd grade. Please encourage families in your Life Groups who are blessed by this ministry to consider serving at the Adventure Club on the night your group doesn’t meet. They can sign-up to serve through the Serve Form.

Family Weekend Registration Live

Family Weekend Registrations are live! You can register for the Friday night banquet and the Saturday morning breakout sessions here.
The third annual Family Weekend will take place from September 22-24. This weekend exists to help families learn how to live biblically while being encouraged through fellowship and having lots of fun together. Friday night will kick off the weekend with a special banquet and teaching from Pastor Ben about "Heavenly Homes: Ordering our Families in Light of Eternity." On Saturday, we will offer three time slots with two different teachings to choose from. These teachings will touch on topics such as singleness, retirement/grand parenting, parenting teens, etc. The whole church will gather for a picnic filled with food, fellowship, and games on Sunday.
Please register children you will need childcare for, however childcare will be limited, so if you have alternative options, please use those. Thank you!

1. Take some time to fill out the following blanks. Think about various circumstances in your life that can be difficult and fill them in so that you can commit to pleasing the Lord regardless of the situation you find yourself in.

2. Of the three ways to work hard to understand what pleases God, which ones do you need to work to improve? Make a plan to see that happen! 

3. Read Hebrews 4:12. How often do you experience conviction after reading/studying the Bible? What do you do in response to that conviction? 

4. Read Psalm 139:23–24 and James 4:17. Is there anything in your life (thoughts or behavior) that your conscience has indicated is a sin and is a barrier to pleasing the Lord? Remember: This could be something you need to start OR stop doing, and it could be something inherently good that is consuming you. 

5. Read Proverbs 15:22 and Proverbs 19:20–21. Have you surrounded yourself with wise counsel? Write down the names of those you consider wise counsel and share them with the group. Do you run important decisions by them before you finalize your plans? Explain that process.

Compass Friends is a Ministry embedded within Compass Kids Ministry that provides someone with a disability a one-on-one support "buddy" as they participate in Kids Ministry. A Buddy helps facilitate access to the Kids Ministry Classroom by providing individualized support tailored to the unique needs of the child they are serving and removes any barriers that might be keeping them from participating in Kids Ministry. Baptism Sunday Coming Up

Our next Baptism service is coming up - September 17th. If there is anyone in your Life Groups or ministries that is a follower of Christ but has not yet been baptized, please encourage them to follow through with this important act of obedience to Christ. They can fill out the application here. Continue to pray for this year to be the most fruitful year of evangelism for our church; that we may see more baptisms as more people are brought from death to life by the power of the Gospel. And pray for those who will share their testimonies on the 17th, as they share what God has done in their lives.

1. Read Psalm 69:1-3. If you are currently in a season of sorrow/suffering, use this text as a template to honestly put into words what you are experiencing and feeling. Be detailed and specific.

2. Read Psalm 69:4-12. Identify parallels between David's experience in this present circumstance to Christ's experience(s) during his life and ministry on earth. What does this teach us about how Christ knows, understands, and sympathizes with our suffering?

3. Read Psalm 69:13-28. What aspects of God's character do you see David targeting in his prayer? How does targeting our prayers toward specific aspects of God's character provide help/comfort in seasons of sorrow? Using your response to question 1, create a prayer list that targets specific aspects of God's character that connect to what you are experiencing and feeling.

4. Read Psalm 69:29-36. David chooses to praise the Lord in the midst of his present suffering. What can we do today to prepare our hearts to praise the Lord in our suffering tomorrow?

5. Read Psalm 69:1-3; 34-36. David begins with great sorrow and ends with great hope, even though there is no indication of his painful circumstances subsiding. How does this Psalm help us navigate the dissonance of our despair? What hope does this Psalm provide for those who are "stuck between a painful circumstance and a theological truth?"

Biblical Counseling Training Track

As was mentioned at the Deacons’ Meeting, we are launching our Biblical Counseling Training Track this Fall. The program will be one year, starting in October 2023 and ending in July 2024, with classes meeting at the 11am service each week. Even if you do not desire to be part of our Biblical Counseling ministry, this will be an incredibly beneficial training for discipling others in Life Groups and ministries. 1. Read Matthew 6:12-13. Why might you be tempted to neglect making confession and asking for help against temptation consistent parts of your prayers? Why are these things so important?

2. Read Psalm 39:4-6. How can considering the brevity of life actually be a healthy and godly thought? What are some earthly things or perspectives that you may actually place too much emphasis on in light of eternity?

3. Read Psalm 90:14. How can you make the sentiment of this verse a goal in your daily time with the Lord? How can these times be times of satisfaction with God’s steadfast love instead of just going through the motions?

4. Read Proverbs 3:5-6. These may be familiar verses, but what does it practically look like when you “lean on your own understanding” instead of relying on God? What can you do to "acknowledge him” more this week?

5. Read Psalm 90:1-2. As you conclude your time with this Psalm, how will you be encouraged knowing that it is possible to have a dwelling place in a God who reigns from everlasting to everlasting?

Men’s Retreat Registration Is Live!

Registration for our 2023 Men’s Retreat is Live! You can register here. As a gift to our Deacons, we will be giving you men a free Camping Mug, one of the add-ons that can be purchased - no need to purchase one yourself unless you’d like multiples of it! Please make a point to a) attend yourself and b) encourage the men in your Life Group and ministries to attend.

At this year's retreat, we will open our Bibles to learn more about the "better country." Our time in worship, study, and fellowship will be a needed encouragement as our culture mocks God and persecutes those who worship Him. As the pressures of this world squeeze in on the church, we will find fuel for the race by fixing our eyes on the finish line!

1. Read Psalm 27:4. What other desires in your own heart might compete with close fellowship with God? Why is God alone ultimately the only one supremely worthy of our affections and attention?

2. Read Philippians 3:7-16. Consider Paul’s example here. Why should a right understanding of justification (we receive Christ’s righteousness through faith) lead to an aggressive pursuit of sanctification (living out Christ’s righteousness in our lives)?

3. In what ways in the past have you not “spoken truth in your heart”? In what ways right now may you be tempted to not be honest with yourself? How can you correct these thoughts with biblical truth?

4. Out of the five aspects of character listed in point 3, which one stood out most to you. How should your life look differently this week as you pursue growth in this area?

5. Read Matthew 7:24-27. Think through some of the temptations you commonly face. If you listen to Jesus, how will keeping his commands bring safety and stability to your life? If you ignore his words, how will that be destructive?
