Pray For Tomorrow’s Women’s Event

As of writing this update, there are 308 women registered for tomorrow’s event!? WOW! Please pray for these women! Pray that if any women attending are not saved, God will give them a new heart. Pray that those who are saved will be sanctified. And pray for Holly as she teaches that the Spirit will guide her to deliver a powerful message from God’s Word!

Women’s Retreat - Registration Opens Sunday

Registration for this year’s Women’s Retreat, The Love of God, opens on Sunday morning! The retreat will be April 18-20th at Quaker Hill Camp and Conference Center. After Sunday’s announcement, encourage the ladies in your Life Groups to sign up and attend the retreat, which will be a wonderful time of fellowship, with teaching centered on the Love of God.

Candidate In Town

Remember, a candidate for a High School Director role here at CBCTV is in town this weekend. His name is Luc LeFort, and he is here with his wife, Ariana. They are spending time with the pastors and their wives, and then Luc will teach at Plants & Pillars this Sunday night. We have been interviewing Luc over the past month, so this trip is a chance for us to interview him in person, get to know his wife more, and let them get an opportunity to evaluate our church as they consider if this is the right place for them. Candidate Coming to Town

New Spring Classes

We have two new classes this Spring: a Christology class meeting on Sunday mornings and a Bible Time Guide Intensive in March.

Behold the King: A Study of the Person and Work of Christ
There is perhaps no greater study to devote yourself to than that of Christ. In fact, the Christian's ultimate pursuit is summarized well as seeking to be "conformed to the image" of Christ (Rom 8:29). Join Pastor Josiah for an 8-week study on the King of Kings and Lord of Lords as we seek to understand better the person and work of Jesus Christ our Lord.

This class begins on February 18th.

Bible Time Intensive
The goal of having a "Bible Time" as a family is to lead your children through the Bible with intentional study so that they can learn, apply, and pray God's Word! This class, led by Pastor Charlie, will teach you how to make your family Bible Time a consistent staple, filled with joy and fruit. The Bible is clear that parents are to raise their children in the discipline and instruction of the Lord (Eph 6:4). God's people were commanded long ago to teach God's commands diligently to the next generation (Deut 6:7) so that they remember the faithfulness of God always. We will discuss topics like having the proper motivations for Bible Time, developing a helpful game plan, and methods for maximizing your Bible Time as a family.

This intensive is on Saturday, March 23rd, from 8:00am-Noon.

Ministry Fair - An Opportunity to Nudge?

Life Group leaders, the ministry fair that will be taking place after each service on Sunday might be a great opportunity to “nudge” some of those folks in your Life Group who are on the sidelines. Consider reaching out to those people tomorrow to let them know about the ministry fair, where they will be able to talk to representatives from several ministries to learn more about serving the church with their gifts!

We have so much to do this year that we must FIRST invest the time to pray for God’s protection, provision, and perseverance! Let’s seek His face together (Psalm 27) this year more than ever before.

2024 Men’s Teaching Series - Titus: Keep Building

Decon Men, we will be going through the book of Titus throughout the year as we gather with the men for breakfast. My prayer is that this will be an encouragement to the men in our church to keep investing in their families and their church.

2024 Men’s Tournament Series

Through the last few years, we have hosted informal gatherings for the men to participate in. This year, we are ramping things up. Presenting the Men’s Tournament Series, a series of three competitions spread throughout the year - A Sporting Clays tournament, a Golf Scramble tournament, and a Pickleball tournament.

These will be great times to enjoy friendly competition and fellowship. And they wouldn’t be friendly competitions if there weren’t prizes on the line - Scheel’s Gift Cards for the top finishers in the each of the events. We also are looking at a prize for the Life Group that does the best over the three competitions - details to come! Most importantly, save the dates for each of them, and encourage the men in your group to get ready for them. Registrations will open soon and we will give more details at the next men’s event.

In just one month, on January 14th, 2024, we will be celebrating our five-year anniversary as a church! As part of that exciting Sunday, we will be having baptisms. If you know of anyone in your Life Groups who is considering baptism, would you encourage them to take that important step of obedience? November Focus of the Month

Compass Charter Door Locking

We will be adjusting the time where the entry doors at Compass Charter lock on Tuesday nights for Adventure Club & Life Groups, so they will now stay unlocked until 7pm. However, from 7pm onwards, if any family arrives late, they will need to be let in by you or someone in your Life Group. Currently, they are locking at 6:30pm and we have volunteers from Adventure Club that monitor for late arrivals presently that will be freed up to serve in Adventure Club in other areas. Please communicate this change to your Life Group members, encouraging them to be there on time, and if they do arrive at 7pm or later, please have them call you to be let in. Remember the virgins of Matthew 25:10-13, who were unwise and therefore absent when the door to the wedding feast was closed and locked, and warn them to not be found locked outside. But also remember Matthew 7:7-8, that everyone who knocks, the door will be opened to them, and show grace for those who arrive late, seeking to enter.

Fostering Hope

There is a serious need in the Treasure Valley to help out children in hard situations who are coming into foster care. This means that there is an opportunity for us to support local foster children in our community by providing for their practical needs! When kids come into foster care a lot of the time they don’t have essential items needed and we would love to bless these children by providing it for them.

If you or your Lifegroup feel led to donate or have any questions please contact Emely Campbell at emelycampbell92@gmail.com for an updated list of needs. Donations can be dropped off on Sundays to the Fostering Hope Box by the Compass Kids check-in area. Our collection of donations will be combined with Bibles and the 3 Most Important Words for Kids packet.

The deadline for these donations is December 10th! Let’s make an impact on these foster kids and their foster families this Christmas season by showing them Christ’s love through meeting these immediate practical needs.

1. As you consider the various glimpses of grace in this passage, which one was most meaningful to you? How should that impact your outlook and actions this week?

2. Read 1 John 1:9-10. What things/people are you most tempted to blame for your sin? Why is blaming others counterproductive in response to sin?

3. In a sin-cursed world, what might people look to for hope besides Christ? How might you be tempted to put hope in these things, and why is hoping in anything but Christ ultimately futile?

4. Read Ecclesiastes 5:18-26. While your work and your home will feel the effects of Genesis 3 this week, how should the grace we find in Christ change our perspective from despair to one of joy this week

5. Read Revelation 22:1-5. What excites you most about this future scene of renewed fellowship with God in heaven? How should this reality encourage or challenge you this week?

A Note Regarding High Schoolers Attending Men’s Retreat

For the high schoolers registered for the men’s retreat, we will have them in a separate small group led by Maseo Fiorello, our Grove Intern. We want them to be able to participate in the retreat fully, but we also want to be sure that, in our men’s life group discussions, we can have deeper conversations that may be difficult if high schoolers were present. Please let anyone in your Life Group who has registered sons know that this is how we will handle it.

Application Questions

1. Read Colossians 2:13-15. While our text in Genesis will certainly help us in our fight against temptation, how does this passage remind us that we are ultimately helpless apart from the work of Christ?

2. What are some of the temptations you know you are likely to encounter this week? What are some specific Scriptures that will help you think clearly and biblically in the face of those temptations?

3. Read James 1:16-18. What are some of the “good gifts” you can remind yourself of this week when you are tempted? Even if you are in a trial, how will you remind yourself of God’s constant goodness?

4. Review the temptations you are likely to face this week. How do each of these temptations undermine the character and goodness of God? How can you directly counter these lies of the enemy?

5. Read Matthew 7:24-27. Disobedience leads to disaster, but obeying Jesus’ words leads to stability. How have you seen both aspects of this reality prove true in your own life? How does that strengthen your confidence in the truth of God’s Word?

1. Read Deuteronomy 10:20 & 13:4. The phrase “hold fast” in these verses is the same Hebrew word used in Genesis 2:24. How does seeing this word used of devotion to God influence how you think about devotion to your spouse? How should that practically influence your attitudes/actions toward him/her?

2. Read Romans 12:2. How might you be tempted to be conformed to worldly ideas about marriage? What Scriptures can renew your mind and bring it back to God’s blueprint for marriage?

3. Read Genesis 2:18. Wives, as you consider God’s design for you to come alongside and help your husband, in what areas would you like to be more intentional in doing this over the next several weeks?

4. Read Ephesians 5:28-30. Husbands, what will it practically look like for you to cherish your wife in the coming weeks? How should both your attitudes and actions change in order to see this growth?

5. Read Proverbs 5:1-6. What are some of the devastating effects that sexual immorality could have on your life and family? Why is God’s design for intimacy the best?

1. Read Ephesians 4:11-13. What role do you or should you play in accomplishing the task of “building up” the body of Christ? In other words, how can you contribute to this community in a way that helps others attain “to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ”?

2. What are some common barriers to growth in a local church context? How can you work through those barriers?

3. Read Ephesians 4:14. Paul makes it clear that there are spiritual consequences when you choose to skip out on God’s design for the local church. Discuss the consequences Paul lists in verse 14. What consequences have you personally observed when believers neglect to prioritize the body of Christ?

4. Read Ephesians 4:15-16. Paul lists four key components of a biblical church community: love, submission (to Christ, our head), unity, and proper participation. Of these four qualities, which do you feel Compass Bible Church is strongest in? What are the opportunities for growth at Compass Bible church and how can you work to address them?

2. Read Proverbs 22:29. How should this text and what we have studied in Genesis motivate you to be skilled and excellent in your work? What are some ways you can pursue excellence this week?

3. In what ways might you be tempted to make work about yourself or go outside of the rules/provision God has given you for your work? What does repentance from these ways of thinking look like?

4. Read Psalm 127:1-2. What are some of the ungodly thoughts we think that can cause us to neglect proper rest and instead pursue “anxious toil”? What biblical thoughts can replace these unbiblical ones?

5. Read Hebrews 4:8-11. What does it look like for you to “strive to enter that rest” and to encourage others to do the same?

2023/2024 Adventure Club Schedules

Life Group Games Details

Our third annual Life Group Games are coming up, one week from Sunday! Chris and Kelly Hernandez, newborn in-tow, will be leading their group’s defense of their title. The games will begin at 6pm and will only go for an hour - no trying to find fake birds in the dark! - and they have been set up so that ALL ages can compete! Please encourage your Life Group to join us for the fellowship of the picnic (starts at 5pm) and the joyful, friendly competition of the Life Group Games. See you at Kleiner Park, Shelter B-1 (same as last year, across from the Meridian Senior Center) for the Picnic and Life Group Games!

1.  As we wrap up Genesis 1, we’ve repeatedly seen the emphasis of the text on the fact that we are created beings and the implication that God alone is worthy of our worship, trust, and obedience. What will you take away from this chapter as the most significant way these truths should affect your daily life?

2. Why is it important for us to connect the dots from a biblical concept like the image of God to cultural issues in our own day? When issues like race or gender come up, how can the image of God navigate these topics in a biblical way in the future?

3. Read Colossians 3:9-10. How do these verses inspire you to greater holiness and a greater knowledge of God? What steps can you take this week to pursue these things?

4. Read Psalm 127:3-5. How does the thought of these verses go against the grain of our culture? How might some of those non-biblical, cultural ideas creep into your own thinking?

5. Read 1 Timothy 6:17-19. As people who live in an affluent society, how can you avoid the errors of trusting in or idolizing material wealth on one hand while not neglecting to enjoy with gratitude God’s creation and material blessings on the other?

It’s Time To Start Pushing the Men’s Retreat

We are only seven weeks away from the Men’s Retreat! Please encourage the men in your Life Groups to register and attend this year’s retreat. We also have special add-ons - a windbreaker, a camping mug, and a hoodie - that must be ordered by September 17th, next Sunday. Orders for these limited items will close then, and we will only purchase the items that are ordered, so get registered and get those add-ons ordered before next Sunday! You can register here. As it gets closer to the retreat, we’ll send rosters out so that you can see who has (and has not) registered from your Life Group.

Application Questions

1.  The fact that God created everything should drive us away from idolatry. What idols will tempt you the most? What will you be tempted to trust or desire more than God?

2. As you consider what we’ve seen in Genesis 1:1-25, why should the reality of a good and glorious creator make these temptations look foolish? What are some specific things about the creation account that stand out to you as you consider this?

3. Read John 1:1-13. Consider the significance of light in Genesis and also in this important account in John’s Gospel. How should this imagery of light practically affect your life this week?

4. Read Psalm 148 and note how the Psalmist connects things in creation with praising the Lord. Be more intentional in observing God’s creation with wonder this week. What do you observe in the world that calls you to praise and worship God?

5. Read Romans 1:21. Considering the context of this passage, why should we view a lack of thanksgiving as a serious problem? What are some things you experience in God’s creation that you should be more grateful for?
