Revival Coffee Soft Launch
Prayer In Life Groups

Revival Coffee Soft Launch

This Sunday is the soft launch of Revival Coffee, between our services. It will be located in the back kitchen, just outside the back door of the Boiler Room. We are not advertising this to everyone as we are still working out the kinks. It is the soft launch, so please come with low expectations and high grace and patience! Also, please note - we will charge for the drinks (basically to cover costs for making them).

Prayer In Life Groups

As a reminder from Deacons Retreat - the pastors would like each Life Group to begin each meeting with prayer, Boiler Room style. Start by spending some time praising God in worship in light of that week’s sermon, then spend time asking for God’s help in applying the sermon. Let’s be faithful in living out our fifth distinctive: We have a genuine reliance upon prayer!

Application Questions:

The Intersection of Pain & Providence
From Prison to the Palace
Genesis 40-41

APPLICATION QUESTIONS

  1. Read Isaiah 44:6-8. What scares you most about the future? What are some other things you might run to in order to know or try to control the future besides God? Why are these things so dramatically inferior to God?

  2. Read 1 Peter 5:6-7. What will it look like for you to humble yourself under the mighty hand of God, especially when there is something in your life that is “taking too long”?

  3. Read Genesis 40:8 & 41:16. What are some situations in your life where you need to acknowledge God like Joseph did? What will that look like?

  4. In what ways might you be tempted to be a “resentful rememberer” instead of a “fruit forgetter”? What are some of the things you need to “forget” so that your life might bear godly fruit?

  5. In what ways should the truth of God’s providence encourage you to be a wise worker? What can this look like at home, at work, or in ministry?

Notes for On-Campus Life Groups

Women’s Events: Help for Single Mother’s & Wives of First Responders

Do you have women in your life groups with unique circumstances that sometimes can’t attend women’s events, due to needing childcare? We have a team ready to help! Please direct these ladies to deb@compassbible.tv if you know of anyone in need. We especially have single moms in mind, as well as women with first responder husbands who may be on a shift. We will do our best to accommodate all requests on an event by event basis with on-site childcare.

Notes for On-Campus Life Groups

Some brief notes from Chris Hernandez:

  1. Please turn off the lights in the room before you leave.

  2. Put your small trash bag in one of the larger trash bins in the lobby.

  3. Vacuum if you made a mess - vacuums are in the closet immediately off the auditorium hallway.

  4. If you meet in the auditorium and make a circle for your group discussion, put the chairs back where they were.

  5. Check for lost and found, remind your groups to look for lost and found (every week we end up with kids jackets and water bottles) - currently stashed in the Corner Room off the front lobby.

Application Questions:

The Intersection of Pain & Providence
Where Victory Comes From
Genesis 39

APPLICATION QUESTIONS

  1. What are some verses that remind you of God’s promises, presence, and providence that can help you trust God even in the darkest of situations?

  2. What are some of the difficult situations in your life where you need to be faithful to do your best? How can the verses from question 1 help you in these situations?

  3. Read James 1:12-18. Why do we sometimes blame God for our problems and temptations? According to this passage, what is the correct view of God, and how will this view properly arm you for the battles of temptation?

  4. Read Proverbs 5:3-6. While the father admits the allure of the “forbidden woman”, he stresses to his son the devastating results of sexual sin. Why are these important things to remember in times of temptation?

  5. Read Psalm 32:3-6. What hope does this passage give to someone who knows he is guilty of sin? What instruction does it give him?

RFTB in the New Year
Upcoming Baptisms

RFTB in the New Year

It’s about that time again! Soon we’ll start the reading plan over, providing a fresh opportunity for people in your Life Groups and ministries to join in. We will be going back to a previous format for Revival from the Bible in the New Year. Each day will have four readings, one each from the Old Testament, Psalms, Gospels, and New Testament. As we go back to this style, we will also be having the other pastors jump in to help with the podcast throughout the year. Keep an eye out as we hit the ground running in 2025, prayerfully seeking to see more people get into God’s Word and get more out of the Word.

Upcoming Baptisms

On January 26th, 2025 we will be having our next baptism service. As we look forward to that date, follow up with anyone in your Life Groups who needs to get baptized, letting them know the date and encouraging them to fill out the baptism form.

Explaining Christianity Class

Explaining Christianity Class

For 6 weeks starting Sunday, January 5, Pastor Stephen will be leading an “Explaining Christianity” class during the 10:30 service. It will be aimed at unbelievers and those unsure of their position before Christ. This is not a class for seasoned believers—unless they bring with them an unbeliever or inquirer! In fact, the best way to get unbelievers into this class is by a direct invite from our people. This is where Life Group leaders come in. In your last group meeting this year, you can encourage your people to think of someone in their life to invite to this class. Maybe it’s someone they’ve shared the gospel with already who has shown some interest. Maybe it’s their chiropractor whom they invite out of the blue. This class is a resource they can use to help lead people to Christ.

Class description: This class is designed to go over the basic building blocks of the Christian faith. It will not be heavy or deep theology, but it is designed to allow you to check out the simple fundamentals of what Christians believe.

Compass will have invite cards available for pick up at the Connect Table on December 15, Lord willing, when it’s announced to the church. We’d love for conversations of who to invite to happen at next week’s Life Groups.

Application Questions:

Wrestling With God
Final Lessons from Jacob & Esau
Genesis 35-36

APPLICATION QUESTIONS

  1. If you think about the things that cause you most to be angry or anxious, what idols do they reveal in your life? What will it look like to put these idols away?

  2. Read Genesis 35:3. How does Jacob describe God in this verse? Can you identify with this? If so, how have you seen these things be true in your own life?

  3. Read 1 John 1:8-9. How does it encourage you to know that our cleansing comes from God’s faithfulness and forgiveness and not our own efforts?

  4. Read James 1:2-4. How can the truths of this verse help us to ask “What can I get out of this?” instead of “How can I get out of this?” when we face hard situations in life?

  5. Read Matthew 16:26. In what ways might you be tempted to cherish worldly success over the blessing of God? What spiritual danger could these things present to your soul?

Remind Your Life Group About the 12:30pm Service
Service Need For This Sunday Morning

Remind Your Life Group About the 12:30pm Service

With the move to three services, we have the opportunity for 600 more souls to attend our church. Because the 8:30am and 10:30am services are far more likely to be where new families will attend, remind those in your Life Groups about the opportunity provided for visitors by them attending the 3rd service (if they can) - creating more space in one of the earlier services for those visitors to come and hear the Gospel.

Service Need For This Sunday Morning

We have 13 large bins that are being sent with John Sanborn to Uganda, loaded with supplies for the missionaries at SOS (thank you to all who helped provide gifts for them!). We need someone to help bring the bins to the Boise airport by 6:15am this Sunday. If you or someone in your life group has a truck, a strong back, and a willingness to help transport these bins, please reach out to Cody at cody@compassbible.tv to coordinate getting the bins tomorrow (Saturday 11/9) after the Men’s Breakfast.

Application Questions:

Wrestling With God
The Blessing You Need Most
Genesis 32:22-32

APPLICATION QUESTIONS

  1. Read Matthew 5:3 and then read Revelation 3:17. Why might you, like the church at Laodicea, be tempted to think of yourself as spiritually rich in and of yourself instead of being “poor in spirit”?

  2. Many people use the idea of “wrestling with God” in reference to prayer. While this episode in Genesis 32 points to an actual physical struggle, what principles from this passage should apply to your prayers before God?

  3. Read Matthew 6:32-33. What might you be tempted to seek more than the blessing of God (particularly in anxiety-inducing situations)? What would it look like to seek first God’s kingdom and His righteousness in those times instead?

  4. Read 2 Corinthians 12:9-10. How has God shown His power to be perfect in your weaknesses? How have you learned to “kiss the wave that throws you against the rock of ages”?

  5. Read Psalm 27:4-6. How does verse 4 logically lead to the next two verses? How should seeking God lead to confidence in the midst of trials?

To help bless the 6 families that serve with SOS Ministry, we have a list of items we would like to send along with John. They will need to be brought to the church offices by Wednesday 11/6, so please reach out to your Life Groups through your normal means to organize the shopping and drop off of any of these items by then. You can see the list here.

The Power of Prayer
Compass Women
The Duwe Family Arrival
Updated Men’s Retreat Registrations by Life Group

The Power of Prayer

Our 5th distinctive as a church is “We have a genuine reliance upon prayer.'“ Life Group leaders, please remember to make sure that you’re spending a good amount of time praying each group. Also, please encourage others in your Life Group to join you at Boiler Room on Sunday mornings and make it a point to go as a leader once a month (as you are able).

Compass Women

Ladies—Tomorrow at our Women’s Event you will hear details for our Christmas Event as well as the opportunity for ladies to pre-order a Christmas sweatshirt. Women’s Ministry would like to gift you a sweatshirt as a thank you for the year-round ministry you do toward women in our church! You can place your order anytime after the event at compassbible.tv/women, and use the discount code: THANKYOU.

Secondly, we need your help! Our events are always drawing new women who don’t yet attend a life group. We’d love for these ladies to be warmly welcomed when they see an empty seat, rather than told it’s reserved for a particular group. Let's make sure empty seats are available to anyone that may want to sit there, and just snag an extra table (or more than enough chairs) if you’re aiming to keep your group together. It’s a safe assumption to expect some extra gals at your table/discussion time at our church-wide events! Thank you for helping us welcome one another in this way!

The Duwe’s Arrival

The Duwe family will be arrive in town next week! We are so excited for them to join our team. They will be arriving on Tuesday, October 15!
Here are a few ways you could help welcome them to the Treasure Valley and our church:

  1. I am looking for a place for their family to say on Tuesday night before they get the keys to their house on Wednesday, so I wanted to throw that opportunity out to you guys if you or anybody you know would be interested in hosting their family (three kids plus one hypoallergenic dog) for that one night! If you’re interested, please contact me!

  2. We are also putting a meal train together for their first couple weeks. Here is the sign up sheet. Feel free to share this with your Life Group or others who may want to help.

  3. Their belongings will be arriving on Thursday, October 17, and we would love to help them unload. Joe Wigton (the leader of our Care Team) will help to coordinate. You can contact him at 208-860-7593

Updated Men’s Retreat Registrations by Life Group
Ministry Fair

Updated Men’s Retreat Registrations by Life Group

Let’s work together to get 200 men to this retreat! As of sending this there are currently 156 men registered. If a few men from each life group signed up over the next few weeks we will hit our goal. This spreadsheet (updated at 2:30pm on 10/4) lists the men registered for the upcoming retreat, organized by life groups. Be sure to check out who still needs to register for the retreat and reach out to them.

Ministry Fair

As we prepare to add a third service in November, it's critical that we enlist more “highly committed participants” to serve in light of our growing needs. This Sunday, after each service in the parking lot, there will be several ministries present to answer questions and sign people up to serve. If there is anyone in your Life Group who isn't currently serving anywhere, encourage them to engage in the ministry fair! Perhaps it would be a good idea to send a message to your Life Group to remind them that the ministry fair is happening this Sunday.

Application Questions:

Wrestling With God
A Stairway to Heaven
Genesis 28:10-22

APPLICATION QUESTIONS

  1. Read Genesis 3:16-19. How do you see these consequences of sin stated at the Fall continuing to resonate in your own life? How have you seen your own sin or the sins of others around you compound these consequences? Think about how this should make you more amazed and grateful for God’s grace!

  2. Read Ephesians 2:11-12. What verb is used at the beginning of each verse? Why is it important for us to consider where we were before Christ saved us or where we would be without him?

  3. Read Joshua 1:5, Matthew 28:20, & Hebrews 13:5. Why is it so important for God to repeat this promise so much throughout the Bible? What are some specific circumstances in your life where you need to dwell more on this promise?

  4. Read Romans 5:6-8. Stop and meditate on what these verses are saying about God’s love for us. What implications should this have for how you think and live?

  5. Read Romans 12:1. What are some specific areas of your life which you need to intentionally offer up to God as a living sacrifice this week?

We are less than a month out from our Men’s Retreat. Please continue to encourage the men in your life groups to register and attend. You can see the men who are registered so far in your life groups at this link that will be updated weekly. Take note of who is coming already and encourage the rest to jump on board!

Stephen Duwe Update

As you know, we have been interviewing Stephen Duwe for the open pastoral role throughout the past few months. Following his trip out here this past weekend, we made him an offer and he accepted the position! Please be praying for Pastor Stephen and his family as they prepare to make the big transition from Washington to Idaho as they join the Compass staff and body. By God’s Grace, the Duwes have already had an offer accepted on a house. Be praying for them as they transition here to Idaho and he begins in his pastoral role overseeing Men’s Ministry, Compass Classroom, and Outreach. He will be out here shortly before the Men’s Retreat. Praise God for His answer to our prayers for more pastors to join the team here at CBCTV - may He continue to raise up faithful men.

Not One, Not Two…

But three services! On November 3rd, we will launch our third Sunday morning service. Each of our service times will be different - we will have 8:30am, 10:30am, and 12:30pm services each week beginning on the 3rd of November. We will be doing a ministry fair to help bring in more volunteers, but be sure to consider who in your Life Groups would be good to encourage to step up and serve at one of the three services.

Family Weekend Volunteers Needed
Mom’s On Mission Night
Biblical Counseling Training Track: The Fundamentals 2024
Stephen Duwe in Town
Life Group Games - The First Event

Family Weekend Volunteers Needed

We still have a need for volunteers to help with childcare on Friday night and Saturday morning for Family Weekend. If there are any in your Life Groups that would be willing and able to help serve, please encourage them to sign up to serve here.

Mom’s On Mission Night

On Friday, November 8th, from 7pm-9pm, we will be having a Mom’s On Mission night for Compass Women. Please add that to your calendars and pass that information on to the women in your Life Groups. We also be moving our Women’s Christmas Event back to Saturday, December 7th, 6:30pm-9pm (this is a one-day move from Friday night to Saturday night).

Biblical Counseling Training Track: The Fundamentals 2024

Several of you took the Biblical Counseling Training Track Fundamentals course last year. We are offering this class again starting on October 13th! We are sending this information to you for two reasons:

First, so that you can sign up if you are interested. As a life group leader or ministry leader, this content is extremely valuable to help you lead your group members and volunteers through the difficulties of life and the various “one-anothers.” Please consider registering if you didn’t take last year’s class. Register here.

Second, so that you can send this link to anyone in your group that might be interested in something like this. Perhaps they are a “runner” who would serve the group even better if they had this training. Perhaps they are someone who has mentioned their desire to learn more about biblical counseling. Either way, feel free to send this link to those who you think may be interested.

Stephen Duwe in Town

Stephen Duwe and his family are in town this weekend. Stephen is a candidate for a pastoral position at Compass. Pray for his time here, that it would provide clarity for both Stephen and us regarding moving forward with him in the interview process. We will plan to have Stephen back for another visit if we continue the interview process after this weekend.

Life Group Games - The First Event

There is one specific Life Group Game that you will need to prepare for ahead of time - The Best Potato Bite. Each Life Group must bring a gluten & dairy free potato dish that Pastor Charlie and Cody will each eat a single bite, ranking the dishes by their individual preferences. Please bring the dishes made, with a single serving for each, and, if it is ‘best enjoyed warm,’ a way for it to be maintained at a good temperature. Please be very careful regarding dairy & gluten contamination in preparation!

Application Questions:

Wrestling With God

Genesis 26

  3. In what areas of your life might you be most tempted to let fear dominate your decision making? What are some biblical passages or realities that could help you make decisions that demonstrate faith in God?

  4. Read Psalm 37:1-8. What are some ways you may be tempted to worry or be angry because of what someone else is doing? How does this passage direct you to handle situations like that?
